About This Service

People booking a single-item move think about the item. In practice the more common damage is to the building, because getting something large through a tight route is exactly the situation where walls and doorframes suffer.

Just-In-Time Moving handles single items across Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.

The two exposures

The property. Doorframes, the corner where a hallway turns, walls at carrying height along a staircase, stair nosings, and floors from concentrated weight or grit. This is what general liability covers and it is the reason to check a company has it before letting anyone in with a wardrobe.

It matters more on a single-item job than on a full move, because the item being moved is usually large relative to the route, which is precisely the difficult case.

The item. Cover for goods being moved is a separate question with its own limits, and worth asking about specifically, particularly if the piece is valuable.

The category people do not expect

Furniture that fails rather than gets damaged.

Older pieces are frequently held together by glue that has dried out, so a piece can be perfectly sound standing still and come apart when it is lifted and carried at an angle. Flat-pack that has been assembled more than once is the same problem for a different reason: cam locks and dowels are designed for one build.

Nobody has done anything wrong when that happens, and it is a genuinely difficult conversation afterwards. Which is why it is worth checking beforehand: rock the piece gently for give at the joints, and look underneath for cracks near fixing points.

If it is loose, tell us. It changes the handling and often means dismantling rather than carrying whole.

What reduces both risks

Protection down before anything moves: floor runners along the route and doorframe protection on tight corners.

Accurate measurements beforehand, so nothing is forced.

Photographs of the item and the route before we start, which takes two minutes and settles any later question about what was already there.

And a decision made in advance about what happens if the piece will not go. On a single-item job that is a real possibility rather than a remote one, and the options narrow considerably once something is wedged on a landing. Deciding beforehand whether you would want it dismantled further, taken to a different room, or simply returned to where it started means nobody is improvising under pressure with a wardrobe held at an angle by three people.

Furniture Movers — FAQ

What is most likely to be damaged on a single-item move?

The property rather than the item. Doorframes, hallway corners, walls at carrying height along stairs and stair nosings, because the item is usually large relative to the route, which is the difficult case.

What if the furniture comes apart while being carried?

It happens with older pieces where the glue has dried out, and with flat-pack assembled more than once. Check beforehand by rocking it gently for give at the joints, and tell us if it is loose, because it changes the handling.

Should I photograph anything first?

The item and the route, before we start. Two minutes, and it settles any later question about what marks were already there, which is worth having on a job where something large is passing close to your walls.
