Certificates of Insurance for Movers in Salt Lake City

If you are moving into or out of a managed building, there is a good chance somebody will ask your moving company for a certificate of insurance. Most people meet the term for the first time about a week before their move, which is later than is comfortable.

What it actually is

A document issued by an insurer confirming that a company holds insurance, what type, what the limits are, and for what period. It is evidence rather than a policy, and it is the standard way one business demonstrates cover to another.

Building managers ask for it because a moving crew works in shared corridors, lifts and loading areas that belong to the building rather than to you, and they want confirmation that damage there is covered.

Who asks for one

Apartment and condominium buildings with a management company, particularly newer ones. Office buildings, almost always. Retail centres. Some senior living communities and care facilities. Occasionally an HOA in a planned community.

Older houses and ordinary residential streets, generally not.

If you are moving into anything managed, assume it will be asked for and find out early rather than waiting to be told.

The part that catches people out: timing

The delay is rarely on the insurance side. It is on the building's.

A building often wants the certificate to name them specifically, sometimes as an additional interested party, and often with particular wording or limits. That request has to reach the insurer, come back, and then be reviewed and approved by whoever handles it at the building, who may not work weekends and may be handling several move-ins.

Ask your building three things as soon as you have a date: whether they require a certificate, exactly what wording or limits they need, and who it should be sent to.

Then pass that to us. Given the details we can get it moving; given a week's notice it is usually fine; given two days it sometimes is not, and that is the situation to avoid.
