The Damage Risk in Moving a Safe, and Who Carries It
A safe is the one household item where the realistic worst case involves your floor, your stairs and somebody's back.

Most moving insurance conversations are about the item being moved. With a safe it is mostly not, because the safe is the thing least likely to be damaged.
Just-In-Time Moving moves safes across Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.
What is actually at risk
Floors. A safe concentrates enormous weight into roughly four square feet. Tile cracks under a point load that a distributed weight would not trouble. Wood dents, and grit under a wheel scores it.
Stairs. Treads, nosings and the structure itself. In older housing here, basement stairs were built as service stairs and were not designed with this in mind.
Doorframes and walls, at the points where something with no give has to turn.
People. This is the serious one. A dense, top-heavy object on a staircase is genuinely dangerous, and an uninsured operator injured on your property is a situation worth taking seriously before it exists rather than after.
General liability is what covers damage caused in the course of the work. Ask to see it. On this job more than most, it is not a formality.
What is not covered, and why we insist
The contents. Empty the safe completely. Beyond removing real weight and stopping contents shifting inside a top-heavy object, it means the contents are never in anybody else's custody. That is better for you and it removes a category of dispute entirely.
Pre-existing floor condition, which is why it is worth photographing the route before we start, particularly tile.
How the risk is actually reduced
Protection laid before the safe moves, not after. Equipment rated for the weight. Enough crew that nobody is holding more than they could hold if something shifted. And a route assessed honestly, including a willingness to say a staircase is not suitable.
Where a floor upstairs is in question, that belongs with a structural engineer rather than with us, and we will say so.
One thing worth settling before the day, because it is awkward afterwards: what happens if the route turns out not to work. A safe halfway out of a basement is a considerably worse position than a safe that never left the room, so we would rather assess honestly from photographs and tell you in advance. If the answer is that it cannot come out the way it went in, that is usually because the house changed around it, and knowing beforehand lets you consider the alternatives rather than making a decision under pressure with a crew standing in your hallway.
