Families are more anxious about this kind of move than any other, and the concern is understandable: an older person, a houseful of belongings accumulated over decades, and several people they have never met.

The answer is not reassurance. It is a small amount of structure, agreed beforehand, that protects everybody including the crew.

Just-In-Time Moving is locally owned and works with older clients and their families across Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.

Do this before the day

Gather the valuables and documents first, as a separate exercise. Weeks ahead, not on move morning. Jewellery, cash, deeds, passports, financial records, medication, anything of sentimental value.

In a long-occupied house these are rarely in one place. They are taped inside drawers, in books, in coat pockets and at the back of wardrobes. Going through the house looking only for these, before any packing starts, is worth the day it takes.

Then remove them from the house, or put them in one locked place. They should not be on the truck, and they are excluded from cover essentially everywhere in any case.

Make a list of the significant items, with photographs. Not an inventory of the house. Ten or twenty things that matter.

Why this protects the crew too

Worth saying plainly. In a move where nobody knows exactly what was in the house, an item that cannot later be found becomes a suspicion, and that is unfair on people who did nothing wrong and distressing for the family either way.

A list made beforehand removes that possibility for everybody. It is the reason we ask for it rather than a formality.

On the day

Somebody the person trusts should be present, ideally not only as a supervisor but as the person answering questions so the crew is not asking the person moving.

Raise anything while the crew is still there.

Ask to see licensing and insurance, and ask whether the same crew works together. Both are reasonable and neither is rude.

One more thing worth arranging, because it comes up afterwards rather than during. Agree in advance where the valuables are going to live at the new address, and put them there on the first day rather than leaving them in a bag in a room full of boxes. The period immediately after a move, when nothing has a settled place yet, is when things genuinely do get lost, and it has nothing to do with anybody carrying them.
