Moving day involves people you have never met carrying every object you own out of your house while the front door stands open for hours. Most people feel awkward asking about that. You should not.

Questions worth asking anybody

Do the people turning up work for you? Some companies use day labour or subcontract to another operator entirely. Neither is automatically bad and both are things you are entitled to know, because it affects who is accountable and who has been vetted.

Will they be identifiable? Knowing who is in your house matters, particularly if you have several people moving between floors.

Who is in charge on the day, and who do I call? Get a number that reaches somebody who knows about your job.

Is the company licensed and insured, and will you show it? Ask to see it rather than accepting the phrase. If you are moving into a managed building you will need a certificate anyway, so you may as well request it early.

What to do on the day

Keep the irreplaceable with you rather than on the truck. Documents, passports, jewellery, medication, anything of genuine sentimental value. This is standard advice from every reputable mover and it is not about suspicion; it is about those things never being out of your hands.

Be present, or have somebody there who can make decisions. It helps the move go faster and it is the sensible arrangement.

Do the walkthrough at the start and the check at the end, covering the truck and every room including the garage. Raise anything while the crew is still there.

The insurance distinction

General liability broadly concerns damage caused in the course of the work, and it is what buildings ask to see. Cover for your belongings in transit is a separate question with its own limits and exclusions, and worth asking about specifically rather than accepting a general reassurance.

Check your own homeowner or renter policy too. Some cover a move, some partially, some not at all, and your insurer can settle it in a five minute call.

One practical note about the open door. On a long move the house is unsecured for hours, and the risk that actually materialises is rarely theft by a crew. It is a pet getting out, or a neighbour's child wandering in, or something small being set down outside and forgotten. Keep pets in a closed room with a sign on it, keep the irreplaceable in your own vehicle rather than by the door where it may be helpfully loaded, and do the final walk of the property before the truck leaves.
