The most disappointing furniture call is the one about a piece that suits the room perfectly and cannot physically get there. It is entirely preventable with two measurements taken before you buy.

Measure the route, in this order

The turn. At the top or bottom of a staircase, or where a hallway changes direction. This stops more furniture than anything else, and it is the first thing to check rather than the last.

The ceiling height above that turn. The measurement nobody takes. A long piece has to be tilted to get round a corner, and the tilt needs headroom. In older houses here, with a low ceiling over a half-landing, this is frequently the binding constraint.

The narrowest doorway on the route, which is usually an interior door rather than the front door.

The stairs themselves: width between handrail and wall, not wall to wall.

The approach outside, including any gate.

Measure the item properly

Height, width and depth, and for anything upholstered the diagonal depth, measured from the top of the back to the front of the base. That is the number that has to pass a turn, and it is the one manufacturers rarely publish.

If your narrowest point and the diagonal depth are within an inch or two of each other, treat it as marginal and ask before buying.

The questions to ask the seller

Does it come apart? Legs, back, arms. Sectionals separate, which is why they get into places a single sofa cannot.

Does the delivery include getting it to the room? Curbside means your driveway, threshold means just inside the front door. Neither means upstairs.

And, for a secondhand piece, how did it get into the room it is in now.

If it is genuinely marginal

Send us the photographs and the numbers before you commit. We would rather tell you honestly that something will not go than turn up and discover it with you on a landing.

It is worth doing this before purchase rather than before delivery, because the two are usually weeks apart and the return window is not. A sofa that cannot reach the room is a return, a restocking discussion and a delivery charge, all of which are avoidable by spending ten minutes with a tape measure while it is still a page on a screen. Retailers are generally happy to give dimensions if you ask, including for the individual sections of anything modular.
