A lot of moves around Washington are families moving to something bigger: another child, an extra bedroom, a garden. It is a good reason to move and a demanding time to do it.

Plan around the children, not the furniture

The single most useful decision: arrange for children to be somewhere else for the hours a crew is working.

Doors stand open, a truck is outside, and there are boxes and equipment everywhere. A move with a toddler underfoot takes considerably longer and is genuinely less safe.

Even a few hours with a friend or a relative changes the whole day.

Set up the children's rooms first

At the new house, do their beds before anything else, made up with their own bedding and familiar things visible.

Small children take their cue from whether the new place looks like somewhere they live. A finished bedroom on the first evening does more than any amount of progress elsewhere.

Ask for it at the start of the day and it will be done that way.

The essentials box matters more

Nappies, wipes, formula, medication, a change of clothes each, a favourite toy, snacks and something to eat with. Packed last, kept with you, never on the truck.

Add a nightlight and whatever is part of the bedtime routine. That is the one thing you will want at eight in the evening and cannot improvise.

Cots and safety equipment

Cots come apart and go back together, and standard disassembly and reassembly is included. If you would rather do it yourself, keep the fittings bagged and taped to the frame.

Stair gates, cupboard catches and outlet covers should go on the list for the first day rather than the first month. A new house has a different set of hazards and children explore it immediately.

Check the garden before letting them out: fencing, gate latches, pool access if there is one, and anything left by builders on a newer property.

What to keep and what to let go

Upsizing is the one move where the usual advice inverts. There will be space, so the pressure to dispose is lower.

Still worth being deliberate about outgrown equipment: cots, seats, toys and clothing that will not be used again. Moving it into a bigger garage means dealing with it later rather than never.

Note that car seats and some safety equipment have expiry considerations, so a move is a reasonable moment to check.
