A quote is only as good as the survey behind it, and you can tell a great deal from what somebody bothers to look at.
The estimate visit is treated as a formality by customers and it is the most informative twenty minutes of the whole process. What somebody looks at, and what they ask, tells you whether the number will hold.

What should be looked at
Every room, including the ones you would not show a guest. The garage above all, then any shed, loft, basement storage and cupboards.
The garage is the commonest reason a quote is wrong. It is frequently a third of the load and people genuinely forget it when describing their house.
Inside wardrobes and cabinets, at least briefly. A room looks the same whether the wardrobes are full or empty and the volume is completely different.
The route out. Front door, hallway width, the turn at the stairs, headroom, and where a truck can park in relation to the door.
The route in at the other end, or photographs of it.
Heavy and awkward items specifically: a piano, a safe, appliances, exercise equipment, a hot tub, large glass.
What is not going. Just as important, and it should be written down.
What should be asked
Are you packing yourself or do you want packing. What is in the garage and will it all be coming. Is anything being sold or disposed of before the day. Are there stairs at the destination. What are the access rules at either end, including HOA requirements. What is your date and how firm is it. Is anything unusually valuable.
Somebody who asks none of these is quoting a generic house.
Your part of it
Be honest. An estimate built on an optimistic description will be corrected on the day, when you have no leverage and the truck is already there.
Show the garage. Say if the wardrobes are full. Mention the treadmill.
Point out anything already damaged, which protects both sides.
What you should get afterwards
A written estimate stating the basis: hourly or fixed, binding or not, what is included, the crew size and the expected hours as a realistic range rather than an optimistic single figure.
It should also state what would change the price. If you cannot tell that from the paperwork, ask until you can.
Virtual surveys
Perfectly reasonable now, done properly. Walk the whole house on video including the garage and cupboards, and expect the same questions. It is the thoroughness that matters, not the medium.
