Used hot tubs are cheap because moving one is expensive, which is exactly the position you are about to be in. Some are genuine bargains and some are somebody else's problem being transferred.

See it running before you commit

The non-negotiable one, and the one sellers of failing spas will find reasons to avoid.

Ask to see it filled, heated and with the jets running. A spa that has been drained and sitting for months tells you nothing, and the expensive faults are exactly the ones you cannot see empty: a failing heater, a leaking pump seal, a cracked manifold or a shell fracture.

If the seller cannot demonstrate it working, price it as though it does not work, because that is the realistic assumption.

What to look at

The shell, for cracks, crazing or repairs. Sun damage is real here and an acrylic shell that has spent years uncovered in full exposure is a different proposition.

The cabinet, for rot, warping and pest damage at the base.

Inside the equipment bay, which is where the truth is. Look for corrosion, mineral scale, staining from past leaks, and repairs done with tape.

The cover. Waterlogged covers are heavy and finished, and a replacement is a genuine expense. Lift one corner; if it is heavy, budget for a new one.

The age. Find the model and serial number and look it up. Beyond fifteen years or so, parts availability becomes a real question.

Budget for the whole thing

This is where used spas catch people. Add the transport, an electrician for the new circuit which may need a permit, the pad if you do not have one, likely a new cover, and a first chemical setup.

Those together frequently exceed the purchase price by a wide margin, and a free spa is rarely a cheap spa.

Ask the seller the right questions

When it last ran, why they are selling, whether it has ever been repaired, and what the access is like at their end. A spa in a walled garden may cost more to extract than it is worth.

Ask them to drain and disconnect properly before collection.

Then check your end

The pad, the supply and the route in, plus any HOA approval, before agreeing anything.
