Hourly Minimums and Why Small Moves Cost What They Do

The rate is not the number that decides a small job. The minimum is.

People comparing quotes for a small move focus on the hourly rate, and on a two-hour job that is frequently the least important figure in the estimate.

What determines the bill is the minimum, how travel is counted, and what else is itemised.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Washington and Washington County.

Why minimums exist

Not a trick, though it can feel like one. A crew booked for your job is not available for another, and a small job consumes a share of the day regardless: getting to you, setting up, and getting back.

So most companies set a minimum, commonly a small number of hours. Below that threshold the price is the same whether the work takes ninety minutes or the full minimum.

The practical consequence: on a very small job, you may as well use the whole minimum. If you have booked two hours and the furniture takes one, have the crew shift the remaining boxes or reposition things in the new house rather than sending them away early.

Ask how travel is counted

The other figure that decides a short-move quote, and companies handle it differently.

Some bill from their yard to your address and back. Some bill a flat travel charge. Some include a set amount. On a job that is only three or four hours, this can be a substantial share of the total.

Ask directly, because two quotes with the same hourly rate can differ considerably on this alone.

The other things that are itemised

Materials, if the crew supplies any. Appliance handling. Long carries or a truck that cannot park close. Stairs, in some quotes. Overtime rates if a day runs long.

Ask what would make this go up. The answer tells you more than the rate does.

How to make a small move genuinely cheap

Be completely finished packing. On a short booking there is no long drive to absorb a delay, so waiting comes straight out of your minimum.

Stage everything by the door before the crew arrives, so the time is spent carrying rather than gathering.

Do the boxes yourself over the preceding week and use the booking for furniture and appliances only.

Combine jobs. If you also need something hauled or an item collected, doing it in the same booking uses time you are paying for anyway.

Ask about mid-month and midweek, which are quieter and easier to schedule well.

Our estimate is free and in writing, and states the minimum and how travel is counted.
