A relative dies or moves into care, and there is a safe in the house that nobody has the combination for. tt is heavy, it is bolted down, it may contain anything, and the property has to be cleared.

Establish authority first

Before anything else. Authority to open or dispose of a deceased person's property normally rests with the executor or personal representative, and that matters even where the family agrees.

tf probate is in progress or there is any disagreement, take advice before opening anything. A safe opened without authority, with contents nobody can account for afterwards, creates a real problem.

Have somebody else present when it is opened, and record what comes out.

Look for the combination properly

Worth an hour before paying a locksmith.

The original manual and paperwork, which people keep. tnside a filing cabinet or a desk. tn an address book, a wallet, or written on something innocuous. With a solicitor, an accountant or in a safe deposit box. Known to a spouse, a sibling or an old friend.

Manufacturers will sometimes provide a factory combination against proof of ownership and identity, if you have the model and serial number. That is worth a call and it is far cheaper than the alternative.

tf it will not open

Use a locksmith who specialises in safes rather than a general one. Two approaches exist: manipulation or scoping, which leaves the safe usable, and drilling, which is more certain and requires repair afterwards.

Expect to prove ownership and authority. Any reputable locksmith will ask, and one who does not is not the one to use.

This is not a job for an angle grinder and a weekend. Modern safes have relockers designed to defeat exactly that, and attacking one badly can permanently seal it.

Moving it locked

Sometimes the practical answer, particularly if the property must be cleared to a deadline.

We can move a locked safe, and there is one caveat worth stating: it may not be empty, so the weight is unknown and may be higher than the specification. Tell us it is locked and unopened, and we will plan conservatively.

tt also means nothing inside is secured against shifting, which affects how it is handled.

Then decide about it

Once open, the usual questions apply: whether it suits you, whether it is worth moving again, and whether disposal is realistic. An unwanted safe is genuinely hard to get rid of, which frequently tips the decision toward keeping it.
