Volume is only one of three things, and it is not usually the one that moves the number most.
People describe a load by how big the pile is and expect that to determine the price. It contributes, and two other things frequently matter more.
Just-In-Time Moving hauls junk across Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County.
The three factors
Volume, which is how much space it takes in a truck. Bulky and light fills a truck fast: packaging, furniture, mattresses.
Density, which is weight for that space. Construction debris, tile, concrete, cast iron, old exercise equipment and plaster from an older house weigh far more than they look. Two piles of the same size can be very different jobs.
Access, which is how the load gets from where it is to where the truck can park. This is the one people never mention and it regularly matters most. A basement clear-out with narrow turning stairs is a different job from the same volume in an open garage.
So when you describe a load, describe all three: roughly how much space it fills, what the material actually is, and what the route out looks like.
How to reduce it
Get it to one place, if you safely can. A load already in a garage or by a door is quicker than one distributed across a basement, a shed and a back yard. Do not do this at the cost of hurting yourself with anything heavy.
Break down what breaks down. Flattened cardboard and dismantled furniture take a fraction of the space. Bulky and empty is the worst thing to pay to transport.
Do it in one visit. A second trip costs more than including everything the first time. Walk the whole property before booking: garage, basement, shed, behind the shed, the side return.
Separate what is staying, ideally into a different room. A pile that is entirely going loads faster and cannot go wrong.
Sort out the hazardous separately. Paint, solvents, chemicals and fuel need a different route and we cannot haul them. Finding that out on the day means a second arrangement anyway.
Quoting
Photographs are usually enough for a straightforward load and give a more accurate figure than a description. Include the route out and where a truck can park, not just the pile.
The estimate comes in writing before anything is loaded.

What's Included
Junk Removal — FAQ
What affects a junk removal price most?
Volume, density and access together, and access is the one people never mention. A basement clear-out with narrow turning stairs is a considerably different job from the same volume sitting in an open garage.
How should I describe my load?
All three factors: roughly how much space it fills, what the material actually is, and what the route out looks like. Construction debris, tile and old exercise equipment weigh far more than a same-sized pile of furniture.
What is the easiest saving?
Breaking down what breaks down. Flattened cardboard and dismantled furniture take a fraction of the space, and bulky-but-empty is the worst thing to pay a truck to carry.
