The question to ask each large item
Not whether you like it. Whether you would buy it again, today, at what it costs to move.
That framing does most of the work, because it converts a sentimental question into a comparison. A dresser you are fond of but would not repurchase is a dresser you are moving out of habit.
Apply it to anything bulky: sofas, beds, dining sets, wardrobes, desks, appliances if they are coming, and anything in the garage.
Usually worth shipping
Anything genuinely good, particularly solid furniture with proper joinery, which also survives repeated disassembly.
Anything personal or irreplaceable, regardless of value.
Anything expensive to replace or hard to find again.
Books, cautiously. They are heavy and they are also the thing people most regret disposing of.
Usually not
Flat-pack furniture that has already been apart once. Cam locks and dowels are designed for a single assembly, and a piece rebuilt twice is held together by less than it looks. It frequently does not survive the second move, so you pay to transport something that then fails.
Mattresses. Bulky, and most people replace them within a few years anyway.
Anything you were already planning to replace. Do it at the far end rather than paying to move the old one first.
Bulk consumables and part-used household supplies. Cleaning products, pantry overflow, half-used paint, which cannot ship anyway.
Outdoor and garage items you have not used in a year.
The exception worth naming
Do not apply this ruthlessly to a child's belongings. Familiar things are a large part of how a child copes with a move, and the saving is not worth it.
Practical
Long-distance work is quoted per job rather than hourly, based on volume, distance and access at both ends, after an actual look at what you own. Which means doing this exercise before you are quoted is worth more than doing it after.
Fuel, propane, paint, solvents and aerosols cannot ship. Documents, laptop, jewellery, medication and anything irreplaceable travel with you.
