Why the Cheapest Moving Quote Often Is Not

When quotes for the same move differ substantially, the difference is usually not efficiency. It is that the companies were working from different amounts of information, or making different assumptions about how the day would go.

The three mechanisms

The quote was made without questions. The commonest by a distance. A company that did not ask about stairs, parking, the carry from the truck or heavy items has estimated a generic move rather than yours. On the day the real conditions apply and the figure adjusts, always upward.

The test is simple: think back to what you were asked. If it was the number of bedrooms and nothing else, you have a guess.

The crew was sized optimistically. A smaller crew produces a lower estimate and a longer day. On an hourly basis a job done by too few people frequently costs more than the same job done by enough, as well as taking all day.

This is counterintuitive and it is why a slightly higher quote with a larger crew is sometimes the cheaper option.

Things were excluded that you assumed were included. Materials, disassembly, the garage, a second stop, stairs beyond a certain number. Ask what is included rather than assuming, and get it in writing.

How to compare properly

Write your details down once and give the identical set to everybody: both addresses, rooms plus what is in the garage, basement and any storage unit, stairs at both ends and whether they turn, parking and the carry distance, and every unusually heavy item.

Then the differences mean something. Without that you are comparing a careful estimate against a hopeful one.

Ask what would make the final figure differ from the estimate. There should be a clear answer.
