Clear-Outs When You Cannot Be There: Salt Lake City

A common situation: a property has to be cleared and the person responsible lives elsewhere. A rental between tenants, a parent's house, a property being sold from another state.

It is entirely workable and it needs a bit more setting up than a job where you are standing there.

Be specific about what goes

The single risk in a remote clear-out is something leaving that should not have. Removing that risk is worth the effort it takes.

The cleanest instruction is a whole-space one: this room is entirely going, this room is not, do not open the closet. Whole spaces are unambiguous. Item-by-item instructions across a phone are not.

If some things are staying in a room that is otherwise clearing, get somebody local to move them into a different room first, or mark them unmistakably and tell us in writing.

Send photographs of anything you specifically want kept, not just described.

Look first, properly

Have somebody walk the whole property and photograph everything, including the garage, basement, shed, behind the shed and any storage area. That gets you an accurate quote and it means one visit rather than two.

If nobody local can do that, say so, and we will look and tell you what is there before anything is loaded.

Agree how it is confirmed

Ask for photographs of the property after the clear-out. It is a reasonable request, it closes the job properly, and it means you are not relying on an account of what happened.

Get the quote in writing before the day, and agree what happens if what is found differs from what was described, because on an unseen property it sometimes does.

Access and keys

Sort out who is letting the crew in, and confirm it the day before. A crew at a locked door with nobody reachable is the most common failure on a remote job.

If there is a lockbox or an agent involved, give us the details rather than the general arrangement.

The limits

Hazardous material including paint, solvents, chemicals and fuel needs a different route and we cannot take it. Older properties usually have some, so mention it if you know.
