What a Long-Distance Move Actually Looks Like

Things that are normal and feel wrong

A window rather than a date. Long routes involve distance, weather, hours regulations and other stops. A window is the honest offer. A confident date is either a much more expensive arrangement or a promise somebody cannot keep.

A gap between loading and delivery. Sometimes days. Your belongings are not lost during it; they are travelling. This is why the advice to pack for a fortnight rather than a weekend keeps appearing.

Quoted per job rather than by the hour. Hourly makes no sense across state lines, which is why the survey of what you own comes before the number.

A survey before quoting. Not a sales tactic. It is the only way to produce a figure that holds.

Some tuning and settling required at the far end. Furniture creaks in a different climate. A piano needs tuning. Doors and drawers fit slightly differently. This is the goods responding to a new environment rather than damage.

Things that are not normal

A price that changes after your belongings are loaded. A refusal to provide a written estimate. No inventory. Being unable to reach anyone who knows about your load. A large deposit demanded up front.

Those are worth reacting to, and the difference between this list and the one above is worth knowing in advance so you can tell which you are experiencing.

Deciding what is not going before you are quoted, because volume is the cost.

Keeping documents, laptop, jewellery, medication and anything irreplaceable with you, along with enough to live on for longer than you expect.

Agreeing at booking who your contact is, when you will hear, and how much notice you get before delivery.

Using the inventory at delivery rather than watching, and raising anything while the crew is still there.

One more that people underrate: deciding in advance where things go at the far end. On a local move you can shuffle a room around next weekend. After a long move you are tired, in a house you may not have stood in before, and directing an unload while making forty placement decisions is genuinely hard. Put a sheet of paper with the room name on each door before the truck arrives, and settle the large furniture in your head beforehand.
