Most people choose a mover partly on reviews, and moving is one of the categories where reviews are hardest to read well. Understanding why makes them considerably more useful.
Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. We are not going to tell you what our rating is; we would rather tell you how to read anybody's.
Why moving reviews skew
The experience is emotionally loaded. People review a move on one of the more stressful days of their year, and the review often reflects the day rather than the crew.
The failure modes are dramatic. A mediocre haircut produces a shrug. A damaged heirloom produces a very detailed review, appropriately. That asymmetry means negative reviews are more numerous and more vivid than the underlying rate of problems.
A lot of complaints are about expectations rather than performance. The commonest is a final figure exceeding a quote, which very often traces back to a quote made without proper questions, or a customer who was not finished packing. That is a real problem and it is a different problem from careless work.
Volume is low. Most households move rarely, so a company can have far fewer reviews than a restaurant of similar size without that meaning anything.
What to actually look for
Read the middle reviews. Three and four star reviews are usually the most informative, because the person is describing rather than reacting.
Look for repeated specifics. One person mentioning lateness is noise. Four people describing the same behaviour is a pattern.
Check what the complaints are about. Price disputes suggest a quoting process worth asking about. Damage suggests handling. Communication suggests communication. These are different problems and only some of them may matter to you.
Read the responses. How a company answers a complaint tells you more than the complaint does.
Discount the extremes at both ends. The very best and very worst reviews are the least representative.
Then ask directly
Reviews cannot tell you whether a company can handle your particular house. Ask about your stairs, your parking, your basement. Ask for licensing and insurance and a written estimate.
Notice whether they asked you about stairs, access and heavy items, because a quote given without those is a guess.
