What Happens When a Crew Packs Your House

Hiring packers is unfamiliar in a way hiring movers is not, and the uncertainty is mostly about the social side rather than the work. Here is the shape of the day.

Before they arrive

You do not need to tidy. You do need to separate.

Set aside anything that is not going, in one room or one clearly marked area, and say so at the start. Set aside anything private, personal or valuable that you would rather handle yourself.

Keep out what you will need until the move: toiletries, medication, chargers, a change of clothes, the kettle. Tell the crew which those are or they will be packed, because a packing crew's job is to pack everything.

Documents, jewellery, medication and anything irreplaceable should be with you and out of the house if possible.

What the day looks like

A walkthrough first, room by room, agreeing what is going, what is not, and anything fragile or valuable.

Then they work room by room rather than category by category, which is why a room gets finished and emptied before the next starts. Boxes are labelled by destination room as they are sealed.

You will be asked things. Whether a cupboard is going. What to do with something ambiguous. Whether an item is fragile. Being reachable makes the day much faster.

It is quicker than you expect. A crew that packs for a living moves through a house at a rate that is genuinely surprising the first time.

Questions people are too polite to ask

Do I need to be here? Ideally yes, or somebody who can answer questions. You do not need to help.

What about the underwear drawer? It gets packed, as it is. If you would rather do it yourself, do it beforehand and say so.

What about the fridge and freezer? Empty, defrost and dry them, allowing at least a day. Not a packing job.

Should I feed them? No. Somewhere to fill water bottles is genuinely appreciated.

How long will it take? Less than you think for the house as a whole, and longer than you think for the kitchen. A crew that packs for a living moves through bedrooms and living spaces at a rate that surprises people, then slows right down where the glass is, because that is where the technique lives and where the time is properly spent.

What if I change my mind about something? Say so while they are in that room rather than afterwards. Unpacking a sealed box to retrieve one item undoes work that has already been done, and the crew would much rather be told at the time.
