HOA Rules on Moving Day

Much of Washington is master-planned, and the association usually has more to say about your moving day than you expect.

Residential Movers in Washington

Coral Canyon, Sienna Hills and the newer developments around Washington are governed communities, and community associations here take access, appearance and traffic seriously.

None of that is a problem when you know about it in advance. It is a real problem discovered at eight in the morning with a truck at a gate.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Washington and Washington County.

Ask the association these questions

Are moving hours restricted? Many communities permit moving only within set hours, and some exclude Sundays or holidays entirely. In summer that matters doubly, since the permitted window may not include the cool early morning you wanted.

How does a truck get through the gate? Gate codes, a call box, a guard, or advance notice of the vehicle. Some require the company's details registered beforehand.

Is there a size or weight restriction? This is the one that stops moves. Some communities restrict vehicles above a certain size on residential streets, and a twenty-six foot truck may not be permitted where a smaller one is.

Where may the truck actually stand? Blocking a street, a fire lane or a neighbour's access is the commonest complaint on a moving day here.

Do you require a certificate of insurance from the mover? Many do. Ask early, because processing is the slow part and it holds up access more than anything else.

Is there a deposit or a fee? Some associations take one against damage to common areas.

Get it in writing

An email from the management company beats a conversation at the gate. Keep it on your phone on the day, along with any gate code and the name of whoever you spoke to.

If a certificate is needed, get it issued and delivered days ahead rather than the evening before.

Tell us what you find out

Restrictions change the plan rather than preventing it. If a large truck is not permitted, we use a smaller one and make two trips, which is a normal solution and needs pricing in advance.

If hours are restricted, we schedule to fit them.

The neighbourly part

Tell the immediate neighbours the day before. A truck outside for six hours is easier for everybody if it was expected, and it heads off most complaints before they are made.

Do not block a mailbox cluster or a fire hydrant, and keep the pavement passable.
