The Five-Mile Move
Moving across the metro is the cheapest kind of move there is, and it is not as cheap as people expect.
Get a Free Quote Call (435) 862-3080A great many moves around here are short: Washington to St. George, one part of Washington to another, or across to Hurricane. People assume a five-mile move costs almost nothing because the driving is trivial.
The driving was never the expensive part, and understanding what you are actually paying for is how you reduce it.
Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Washington and Washington County.
What you are paying for
Carrying, not distance. Every item comes out of one house, onto a truck, off again and into another, and that work is identical whether the truck then drives five miles or fifty.
On a short move the drive might be fifteen minutes of an eight-hour day. Reducing it to ten changes nothing.
So the levers are the ones that affect handling: how much there is, how far it is carried at each end, whether there are stairs, and whether anybody is waiting.
Where a short move genuinely is cheaper
No overnight, no delivery window, no transfer between vehicles, and no storage in transit. Everything happens in one day and you sleep in the new house.
It also means a second trip is possible if something is left, which on a long move it is not.
How to make it genuinely cheap
Get an overlap on the keys if you can. This is the biggest lever available on a local move and people rarely ask for it. Even two or three days converts one intense day into a steady transfer.
Then move everything small yourself across that overlap. Boxes by car over several evenings cost nothing but time, and boxes are most of the trips.
Book a crew for the furniture and appliances only, for a short window. Beds, sofas, the fridge, the washer, and anything heavy or awkward.
That arrangement is a fraction of a full move and it removes the part where people get hurt.
Move less. Clearing the garage weeks ahead removes weight, volume and hours at once, and around here garages are large.
Be completely packed before we arrive. Paid time spent waiting is the commonest waste on a short job, because there is no long drive to absorb it.

Ask about minimums
Most companies have a minimum number of hours, and on a genuinely small move that matters more than the rate. Ask what it is and how travel time is counted before comparing quotes.
Our estimate is free and in writing, and if you do not need a crew at all we will say so.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't a five-mile move much cheaper?
Because you are paying for carrying rather than distance. Every item is loaded and unloaded identically whether the truck drives five miles or fifty, and on a short move the drive may be fifteen minutes of an eight-hour day.
What is the biggest saving on a local move?
An overlap on the keys, which people rarely ask for. Even two or three days lets you move everything small by car over several evenings, then book a crew for a short window for furniture and appliances only.
What should I ask when comparing quotes?
The minimum number of hours and how travel time is counted. On a genuinely small move the minimum matters more than the hourly rate, and it is the commonest reason two short-move quotes differ.
