The route matters more than usual
Where the only access to a back garden runs past a pool, say so when booking.
A narrow path between a pool edge and a wall is a poor place to carry a wardrobe, and pool decking is frequently slippery and sometimes not built for concentrated point loads from a loaded dolly.
If anything large is going to a back garden, a spa, a shed, patio furniture or gym equipment, we would rather plan that route in advance than assess it while holding something heavy.
Protect the decking and the surround
Coping stones and pavers around a pool crack under point loads, and they are expensive to match afterwards.
Boards or track down over any section a heavy item crosses. Nothing dragged.
Tell us if the decking is new or recently resurfaced.
Safety on the day
The part worth being deliberate about. Doors and gates stand open for hours during a move, and pool gates are exactly the ones that get propped.
If there are children in either household, that is a genuine hazard rather than a theoretical one. Arrange for children to be elsewhere, and if a pool gate must be propped for access, somebody should be responsible for it and it should be closed the moment the route is finished.
The same applies to pets.
The first week
Get the equipment explained. Ask the seller or the previous owner to walk you through the pump, filter, timer, heater and any automation, or book a pool service to do it. Inheriting a system nobody explained is how expensive mistakes start.
Find the shut-offs and the breaker for the pool equipment.
Get the water tested rather than assuming it is balanced. A pool that has sat unattended during a sale frequently is not, and hard water here makes chemistry harder to hold steady.
Check the barrier and gate latches work properly, and understand what your community and insurer require, since both may have conditions about fencing and covers.
Tell your insurer you have a pool. It affects liability cover and is not something to leave unmentioned.
