Mid-semester moves are common: a housing situation that stopped working, a transfer, a job, a relationship ending, or a lease that turned out to be unaffordable.

The move itself is small. Doing it without losing a semester is the actual problem.

Sort the academic side first

Before the housing, because the deadlines are less forgiving.

If the move affects which campus or how you attend, speak to an advisor early. Ask about deadlines for changing enrolment or withdrawing, what refunds apply and by when, whether classes can continue remotely, and how any change affects financial aid.

Financial aid is the one that catches people. Dropping below a certain course load can affect eligibility and, in some cases, trigger repayment. That is worth confirming before making a decision rather than after.

If you are transferring institutions, get the credit transfer position in writing rather than relying on what somebody said.

Then the lease

Leaving mid-term rarely means simply leaving.

Find out whether you can assign or sublet and what approval is needed, since on most shared leases the original tenant remains liable until the office agrees otherwise. A private handover arranged between friends does not release you.

Ask about an early termination fee, which may be less than the remaining rent and is worth knowing as a number.

If you are on a joint lease with roommates, be straight with them early. They are liable for the whole rent if you stop paying, and that is the conversation that ends friendships when it happens by surprise.

Move at the least damaging point

Between assessment periods rather than into one. A weekend, or a break if there is one.

Do not schedule a move the week before finals, which people do and regret. A move costs more working capacity in the following days than anybody expects.

Practical points

Keep coursework, a laptop and chargers with you rather than on a truck, and make sure you have somewhere to work from the first evening.

Test the internet in the new place before committing if you can.

Change your address with the institution, not just the postal service, since transcripts and financial correspondence go to what they hold.
