Decide honestly whether it is worth storing
Do this arithmetic before renting anything, because it changes decisions.
Price the unit for the whole expected period rather than the monthly figure. Then compare that with what the furniture is worth and what replacing it would cost.
Ordinary furniture stored for two years frequently costs more in rent than it would cost to replace, and it comes out looking worse than it went in. Good furniture, anything with meaning, and anything you will genuinely use again is a different case.
Storage is reasonable for a decision with a date on it. It is expensive for a decision nobody wants to make.
How furniture should go in
Clean and completely dry. Anything even slightly damp develops mould in a sealed unit within weeks, and upholstery is the worst offender.
Covered, but breathing. Moving pads or cotton sheets rather than plastic, which traps moisture against finishes and is worse than nothing.
Off the floor, on pallets or boards.
Dismantled where it dismantles, which saves substantial space and reduces damage. Bag the fittings and tape them to the piece.
Sofas and mattresses on edge where they can be, but supported rather than leaning against a wall for months.
Nothing stacked on anything with a finish.
What the climate here does
A standard unit is uncooled, and a Washington summer is severe.
Leather dries and cracks. Adhesives soften, which is how veneer lifts and joints let go. Anything with a battery should not be in there at all, and candles, records, electronics and artwork should not either.
For anything genuinely valuable, price climate control against what would be damaged. It is usually the cheaper answer.
Getting it back out
Leave an aisle when you load, or you cannot reach anything without emptying the unit into the corridor.
Photograph the loaded unit and keep an inventory, since memory of what is in there fades faster than you expect.
Put a review date in the calendar rather than letting it run.
