Small Safes: When You Do Not Need a Crew

People with a safe frequently assume it is automatically a specialist job. Sometimes it is not, and it is worth knowing where the line falls before paying for a crew you do not need.

Where the line roughly sits

The honest boundary is somewhere around two hundred pounds, and it depends more on the route than the number.

Under that, on flat ground, with two capable adults and an appliance dolly: generally manageable. Small gun cabinets, document safes, under-desk units and most fire safes fall here.

Above it, or with any stairs, or through a tight turn: hire it. The weight goes up faster than people expect and the consequences of losing control do not scale gently.

Note that safes are considerably denser than they look. A compact fire safe can weigh far more than an appliance of the same size, because it is steel and fill rather than an empty box.

tf you are doing it yourself

Empty it first, and check the bottom.

Know the weight, from the make and model, before you decide anything. This is the step people skip.

Use an appliance dolly with a strap, not a hand truck and optimism.

Protect the floor along the whole route. A concentrated point load on hardwood or tile does damage disproportionate to the weight, and tile can crack.

Clear the route completely, including rugs.

Do not attempt stairs. This is the firm one. A safe on a staircase is where injuries happen, and a small safe is entirely capable of breaking a foot or a stair tread.

Lift with the dolly, not with your back, and if it feels wrong, stop.

Where it stops being sensible

Stairs of any kind. A tight turn where the safe has to be tilted. Anywhere the safe has to be lifted rather than wheeled. Any anchoring that needs releasing. Anything you are not confident about.

The cost of a short booking is small against an injury or a cracked floor.
