Rough figures, honestly
For one person working steadily, with boxes and materials already to hand:
A bedroom: three to five hours, more with a full wardrobe.
A living room: four to six, more with books, media or ornaments.
A kitchen: six to ten, and it is the room people underestimate worst. Everything is fragile, heavy or awkward.
A bathroom: one to two.
A garage: anywhere from a day to a weekend, and around here garages are large.
A loft or storage cupboard: unpredictable, because it is sorting rather than packing.
A three-bedroom house is therefore commonly thirty to fifty hours of actual work. That is not a weekend. It is a fortnight of evenings plus both weekends, and that assumes no sorting.
Sorting is a separate job
The figures above are for packing things you have already decided to keep.
Deciding is slower than packing and it is emotionally tiring in a way packing is not. Do it first, weeks ahead, as its own task.
The order that works
Start with what you do not use: garage, loft, seasonal items, books, decorations, spare bedrooms. Six weeks out is not too early.
Then the rooms you use less. Then, in the final days, the kitchen and daily items.
Pack the kitchen last but leave real time for it, and keep out a kettle, a few mugs, a pan and cutlery in a box that travels with you.
Where to buy time
If the schedule is genuinely tight, the highest-value thing to hand over is the kitchen. It is the slowest room, the most fragile, and the one where professional packing removes the most risk.
The second is anything fragile: artwork, mirrors, glass.
Be honest with yourself two weeks out
Look at what is actually packed against what is left. If the remaining work does not fit the evenings available, book help then rather than discovering it on the morning.
