The garage is the single most common hauling job we do, and it is the one where the cost varies most according to what the owner does first.

Sort it before you book, not during
The biggest lever on the price. A crew that has to wait while you decide about each item is being paid to wait, and decisions take far longer than loading does.
Do the sorting over a couple of weekends, then book the collection for a specific date. Booking the date first is the trick that makes it happen: an open-ended plan to sort the garage is one that never finishes.
Sort into four piles, not two
Going. The haul.
Staying.
Sell or donate, which needs its own deadline or it becomes the fifth pile.
Cannot be hauled, which is the one people forget and which stops a job on the day.
That last pile is paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, fuel, propane tanks, motor oil, car batteries and tyres. County household hazardous waste collection handles most of it, shops take back oil and batteries, and propane goes to an exchange point.
Deal with it separately and in advance.
Separate the metal
It has genuine scrap value and it is the clearest case of honest diversion. Old appliances, exercise equipment, tools, shelving and fencing are largely metal.
Putting it in its own pile costs you nothing and improves the outcome.
Stage it where the truck can reach
The other real saving. Moving material from the back of a garage to a vehicle is labour, and labour is what you are paying for.
If you can bring it to the front of the garage or the driveway beforehand, do. If you cannot, that is fine and worth mentioning when quoting so the estimate is accurate.
Time it for the cooler part of the day
Genuinely relevant here. Garage work in a Washington summer afternoon is slow going, and on a job priced by time that matters. Early morning is a different experience.
Then stop it refilling
The garage refills because it is the default destination for anything undecided.
Give undecided things a box with a date six months ahead written on it. If it is unopened when the date arrives, it goes without being reopened.
