Mattresses and worn furniture are the items households get most stuck with. They are too large for ordinary waste collection, essentially unsellable, and refused by most charities.

People end up storing them in a garage for years, which is how a small problem becomes a permanent one.

Why charities refuse mattresses

Almost universally, and it is not fussiness.

There are hygiene concerns they cannot verify, resale restrictions in many places, and a real risk of pests that would affect everything else in their warehouse. A charity accepting one used mattress can compromise a considerable amount of donated stock.

Do not plan around donating a mattress. Assume it is a disposal job.

Check the alternatives first, briefly

Retailer take-back. If you are buying a replacement, most retailers will remove the old one on delivery, frequently for a modest fee and sometimes free. This is the easiest route and it is worth asking at the point of purchase rather than after.

Recycling. Mattresses can be broken down into steel, foam, fibre and timber, and some areas have programmes for it. Availability varies, so it is worth a look rather than an assumption.

Furniture that has no taker

Be realistic about which category yours is in.

Genuinely serviceable furniture in good condition will find a home through a charity or a free listing, and quickly.

Stained upholstery, broken frames, particleboard furniture that has been taken apart once, anything that has been outdoors in this sun, and old entertainment centres will not. Those are disposal, and accepting that saves weeks of listing things nobody collects.

Do it in one visit

The practical advice. Most households have several of these at once: a mattress, a sofa, an old recliner, a broken desk.

Dealing with them in a single collection is considerably cheaper than piecemeal, and it clears the problem rather than reducing it.

Have it accessible if you can, though we do the loading. Tell us what it is and how many, since a mattress and a sofa price differently from boxes.

Check for anything left inside furniture, which happens more often than you would think.

If a mattress has any pest concern, say so plainly. It changes how it is handled and it is far better said than discovered.
