Choosing Where the Hot Tub Goes

People choose a spa position for the view and then discover the practical problems over the following year. Since a filled tub is essentially immovable, this is worth thinking through before delivery rather than after.

The walk from the house

The single most predictive factor in whether a spa gets used.

A tub at the bottom of the garden gets used considerably less than one a few steps from a door, because in January you are walking that path wet. Short, direct and lit is what makes a spa part of daily life rather than an occasional event.

Consider the surface underfoot too. Gravel is common here and unpleasant on bare feet.

Sun and shade

In this climate the mistake is usually too much sun rather than too little.

Full afternoon exposure heats the water beyond where you want it in summer, fades and degrades the cover quickly, and makes the surrounding surface too hot to walk on. Covers are a consumable here and direct sun shortens their life considerably.

Morning sun with afternoon shade is the better arrangement, from a wall, a pergola or planting. If no shade exists, plan for it.

Privacy and the neighbours

Worth walking your neighbours' sightlines rather than only your own. An elevated deck next door changes the calculation entirely.

Also think about noise. A spa's pump is audible, and against a shared boundary at eleven at night that matters. Some communities here have rules about equipment noise and hours.

Service access, which everybody forgets

A spa needs its panels removed for service, and eventually it will need service.

Leave genuine clearance on all sides, particularly at the equipment bay. A tub tucked into a corner with two inches behind it means a technician cannot reach the pump, and moving a filled spa to get at it is not an option.

Leave room for the cover lifter to operate as well, which needs space behind the tub.

The practical checks

Where does the water go when you drain it, which is several hundred gallons two or three times a year. Not into a neighbour's garden or onto a foundation.

How far is the electrical supply, since a longer run costs more.

Is the route to the position wide enough to get the spa in at all, including gates and turns.
