Combining Two Households Into One

Moving in with a partner is a particular kind of move. Neither of you is downsizing exactly, and yet a great deal has to go, because two functioning homes contain two of nearly everything.

The logistics are simple. The deciding is not.

Decide against the space, together, before either of you packs

The mistake is each person sorting their own things separately and then discovering the duplication at the far end, in a hallway, with a crew waiting.

Instead, take the new floor plan and work through it as one exercise. One sofa. One dining table. This many bookcases. Then decide which one of each, together and in advance.

Doing this a fortnight out rather than on the day removes almost all of the friction, because it separates the decision from the pressure.

The categories that duplicate

Predictable, after enough of these. Sofas, dining tables, beds, televisions, desks. Then the kitchen, which is the worst: two sets of pans, crockery, cutlery, appliances and utensils.

Then tools, cleaning equipment, linen, and a surprising quantity of chargers.

Work through the kitchen deliberately as its own task. It is the single largest duplication in any combined household and the easiest to defer.

Be fair about whose goes

Worth naming, because it is where these get difficult.

The default tends to be that whoever is moving in gives things up, which is not always the right answer and is worth examining. Keep the better item rather than the item belonging to whoever owns the lease.

Where something matters to somebody for reasons that are not about quality, that is a legitimate reason and it does not need justifying in practical terms.

Have somewhere for the surplus to go

The plan fails here if you do not. Sorted duplicates that sit in a garage waiting for a decision gradually reintegrate.

Book a hauling collection or a charity pickup for the day after you sort, and sell what is genuinely worth selling in the weeks before.

Storage is reasonable for a genuinely undecided item with a review date on it, and expensive for a decision nobody wants to make.
