A move within Utah and a move across a state line are governed differently. The interstate one comes with a set of federal requirements and consumer protections that most people have never been told about.

Knowing they exist is most of the benefit, because a company that meets them is a company behaving normally, and one that does not is telling you something.

Check the registration

Any company moving household goods across state lines must be registered with the federal regulator and hold a USDOT number, which you can look up.

That lookup shows operating authority, insurance on file and complaint history. It takes a minute and it is the most useful minute in the whole process.

You are owed documents before the move

An interstate mover is required to provide consumer information explaining your rights and the claims process, along with a written estimate.

If nobody has given you anything of the sort, that is a meaningful signal about how the rest will go.

Understand who you are hiring

Some businesses are carriers, who move your goods with their own trucks and crews. Others are brokers, who sell you a move and arrange for a carrier to perform it.

Both can be legitimate, and brokering is not a trick. But you are entitled to know which you are dealing with, and to know the name of the carrier who will actually turn up. Ask directly and get it in writing, because a broker is not the party carrying your furniture and cannot answer for it in the same way.

Valuation, again

Interstate movers must offer at least two levels of liability: a basic level included at no charge and settled by weight, and full value protection which costs extra.

The basic level is not what most people assume. Settled by weight means a light valuable item is compensated at very little. Decide deliberately rather than by default.

Weight and the delivery

Where a price depends on weight, you are entitled to know how that weight was determined and to see the documentation.

At delivery, inspect before signing. Note damage or missing items on the paperwork at that moment. Claim deadlines are limited and a clean signature weakens your position considerably.

Keep everything

Estimate, bill of lading, inventory, weight tickets and correspondence, in one folder that travels with you rather than on the truck.
