On a spa move, people worry about the tub. In practice the tub is the robust part, and the things most likely to be damaged are the ones it passes over and between.

Worth knowing in advance, because most of it is preventable and the rest should at least be expected.

What is genuinely at risk

Pavers and hardscaping. A spa on dollies concentrates a great deal of weight onto small contact points. Pavers set in sand can shift or crack, and edge restraints can be pushed out. This is the commonest damage on a spa move.

Decking. Boards, and more importantly the structure. A deck that carries people comfortably is not necessarily designed for several thousand pounds moving across it on wheels.

Fencing. Frequently a section has to come out, which is normal and should be agreed in advance rather than discovered.

Irrigation. Buried lines, valve boxes and drip systems along the route. In St. George gardens these are everywhere and rarely marked.

Landscaping. Plants, gravel, edging and lighting near the path.

Gate posts and the house itself where the route is tight.

How it should be handled

The route gets walked and planned before anything moves. Plywood or track down over pavers and decking to spread the load rather than concentrating it. Fence panels removed properly rather than forced.

Anything fragile along the route moved beforehand, and irrigation heads and valve boxes identified.

Photographs of the route before work starts, so condition is established rather than argued about later.

What you can do

Tell us what is under the ground. You know where the irrigation runs and we do not, and that single piece of information prevents the most annoying category of damage.

Say if the decking is older or you have doubts about it. Point out anything you particularly do not want touched.

Clear the route: pots, furniture, lighting, anything moveable.

Where damage is unavoidable

Sometimes it is. A fence section that has to come out may not go back looking identical, and pavers may need resetting after a heavy load crosses them.

The right approach is to say so beforehand rather than after, so you can decide whether to accept it, choose a different route, or make good afterwards as part of the plan.
