The part worth understanding

Our crew is covered under our own arrangements, including for injury while working. Your friends are not.

A friend hurt carrying your sofa is not covered by our insurance, is unlikely to be covered by theirs, and may have a claim against your homeowners policy or none at all. It is worth knowing that before rather than after, because moving injuries are common and backs are expensive.

The same goes for damage. If a helper puts a sofa through a doorframe, that is not something a moving company's liability cover addresses.

None of this is a reason not to accept help. It is a reason to divide the work sensibly.

Divide it by risk, not by strength

The useful principle. Give the hired crew the things where injury or damage is likely, and keep helpers on the things where neither is.

Crew: anything heavy, anything on stairs, appliances, the truck loading, anything awkward through a turn, and any specialist item.

Helpers: boxes on flat ground, carrying to a staging point, breaking down boxes, cleaning, watching the vehicle, and looking after children or pets.

That split uses everybody well and puts the risk where it is covered.

Do not have both on the same item

The specific thing to avoid. Mixed teams on one heavy piece are where accidents happen, because a professional crew works to a pattern and pace that somebody unfamiliar cannot read.

One item, one team. It is safer and it is faster.

Keep the stairs professional

Almost every serious moving injury involves stairs and something heavy. In St. George add the summer heat, which affects untrained helpers considerably more than it affects a crew who work in it daily.

Practical points

Tell us in advance that helpers will be there, so the crew plans around it rather than working out the situation on arrival.

Have one person in charge of decisions. A move with four people all directing is slower than one with one.
