Families arrange moves for relatives regularly, and usually informally: an adult child books the movers, signs the paperwork and makes the decisions. Most of the time that is fine and nobody thinks about it.

Occasionally it matters a great deal, and it is worth knowing where the lines are before rather than during.

Who is actually the customer

Worth being clear about. The person whose belongings are being moved is the customer, whoever is arranging or paying.

Where they can make their own decisions, they should be making them, including the slow ones. Being consulted about your own home is not a courtesy to be traded for efficiency.

We will take instructions from a family member the person has identified, and we will not disregard the person themselves in favour of whoever is on the phone.

Where formal authority matters

Signing contracts, agreeing valuation levels and authorising disposal of property are decisions with consequences.

If the person has capacity, they can authorise a relative to act, and saying so clearly avoids all difficulty. If capacity is genuinely in question, a power of attorney or other formal authority is the right basis, and this is the point at which to speak to a solicitor rather than proceed on goodwill.

The situation that causes real trouble is disposal: furniture, jewellery or possessions cleared by a well-meaning relative without clear authority, which cannot be undone and which other family members may later question.

When siblings disagree

Common, and not something a moving company can resolve.

What helps: one named person as the point of contact, decisions about significant items written down rather than remembered, and photographs of what leaves and where it goes.

We will follow one set of instructions from the person the family identifies. We will not adjudicate between relatives, and we will say so plainly if we are asked to.

After a death

Different again. Authority to dispose of a deceased person's belongings normally rests with the executor or personal representative, and it matters even where the family agrees. If probate is in progress or there is any dispute, take advice before clearing.

Practical points

Keep documents, cash, jewellery and medication with a family member. Photograph valuables beforehand. Have one person present on the day who can answer questions.
