Why there is a window at all
On most long-distance moves a shipment shares a truck. That truck collects and delivers several households along a route, and the sequence depends on where everybody is and when each was booked.
Your goods may also transfer between vehicles or wait briefly at a facility. None of that is unusual, and it is why a carrier commits to a spread of days rather than an hour.
A dedicated truck carrying only your shipment removes the uncertainty and costs more. That is a legitimate option to ask about if the timing genuinely matters.
What to ask before you book
The delivery spread in days, in writing. What the first available delivery date is. How much notice you get before the truck arrives, which is usually a call the day before. What happens if you are not ready to receive, and what storage would cost. Who to contact for an update, and how often.
Get these answers before signing rather than afterwards, because afterwards they are whatever the paperwork already said.
Plan for the later end
The practical advice that solves most of it: assume the late end of the window and be pleasantly surprised.
That means packing a two-week box that travels with you, not on the truck. Bedding, towels, a basic kitchen, tools, chargers, medication, documents, clothing, and anything for work or school.
Living in an empty house for a fortnight is a common long-distance experience. It is entirely manageable if you prepared for it and miserable if you did not.
Do not give up your old place too early
Where you have any choice, keep an overlap. It is cheaper than a hotel and considerably cheaper than storage plus a hotel.
On the day
Be present, or have somebody who can make decisions. Check items against the inventory as they come in. Note anything damaged or missing on the paperwork before signing.
