About This Service

Storage units get loaded in a hurry at the end of a long day, and the result is a solid wall of boxes with everything you need at the back. Then you pay for it monthly and dread opening it.

Twenty minutes of planning changes that entirely.

Just-In-Time Moving is locally owned and loads storage units across St. George and Washington County.

Leave an aisle

The single most useful decision, and the one people skip because it seems wasteful.

Leave a walkway down the centre, or at minimum along one side, from the door to the back wall. You lose a little capacity and you gain the ability to reach anything without unloading the unit into the corridor.

Anybody who has stored for more than a few months and did not do this knows why it matters.

Think about what you will want

Before loading, separate what you might need from what you certainly will not.

Seasonal items, documents, tools and anything for a house you are still setting up go near the door. Furniture and long-term storage go at the back.

Face box labels toward the aisle, and number them against a list you keep on your phone.

Build it properly

Heavy on the bottom, light on top, as with a truck. Furniture protected rather than bare, since a unit is not a clean environment and dust here is persistent.

Sofas and mattresses on edge where they can be, which saves considerable floor area. Do not lean them against a wall unsupported for months.

Dismantle what comes apart. A bed frame flat against a wall takes almost no space.

Use the height. Units are taller than people load them, and shelving or sturdy stacking recovers a lot of capacity.

What the climate here does

Standard units are unheated and uncooled, and a St. George summer is extreme.

Do not store candles, vinyl records, electronics, anything with batteries, artwork, musical instruments, cosmetics, liquids or anything perishable. Batteries in particular leak and ruin whatever is around them.

Everything fabric goes in clean and completely dry, in sealed containers rather than bags. Damp fabric in a sealed unit is a problem within weeks.

Consider climate control if you are storing anything on that list, and price it against replacing what would be damaged.

Practical points

Photograph the loaded unit and keep an inventory. Pallets or boards under anything against the floor. Check what the facility requires regarding insurance, since their cover is generally for their building rather than your contents.

Labor-Only Movers — FAQ

What is the most important thing when loading a unit?

Leaving an aisle from the door to the back wall, down the centre or at least along one side. You lose a little capacity and gain the ability to reach anything without unloading the unit into the corridor.

What should not go in a standard unit here?

Candles, vinyl records, electronics, anything with batteries, artwork, instruments, cosmetics, liquids and anything perishable. Units are unheated and a St. George summer is extreme. Batteries leak and ruin whatever is around them.

How should things be arranged?

Seasonal items, documents and tools near the door; furniture and long-term storage at the back. Heavy on the bottom, labels facing the aisle, numbered against a list, and use the full height, which most people do not.
