People booking labour by the hour usually ask for the smallest crew, reasoning that fewer people cost less. Sometimes that is right and often it is not, because the hourly rate is not the number that matters.

What matters is the total, and the total is the rate multiplied by hours.

Why more people can cost less

A three-person crew does not simply carry more; it works differently. One can stay in the truck stacking while two carry, which means the loading never stops and nobody is waiting.

With two people, both carry, then both stack, then both carry again. The truck work and the carrying alternate rather than overlapping.

On a job with any volume, the third person often reduces the hours by more than enough to cover their rate. On stairs the effect is larger still, since a relay can be set up rather than everybody walking the full route each time.

When two is the right answer

Small jobs. A studio, a partial move, a few items. There is not enough work to keep three people busy and you will pay for standing about.

Tight spaces. A small apartment with one door and a narrow hallway has a limit on how many people can usefully work at once.

Short bookings where the setup and travel is a meaningful share of the time.

When you are helping and can take the flat-ground carrying yourself.

When three or four earns its cost

Anything with real volume. A three-bedroom house upward.

Stairs at either end, where the relay effect is worth the most.

A long carry to the truck, for the same reason.

A deadline. A rental return, a lift booking, a closing time at a complex. Here the extra person buys certainty rather than savings.

Summer. Genuinely relevant here. A larger crew rotating through the heaviest work sustains a pace that a smaller one cannot in July, and the job finishes before the worst of the afternoon.
