Moving Furniture for Flooring, Painting or Repairs

With as much remodelling as goes on in St. George, a steady part of our work never leaves the property. Flooring is going in, a room is being painted, a leak is being repaired, and everything has to come out and go back.

Most contractors do not include this, and reading the quote carefully is worth doing before the day they arrive.

Check what the contractor covers

Some flooring companies move furniture as part of the job, some charge for it, and many exclude it entirely. Painters are more likely to move things to the middle of a room than out of it.

Almost none will handle a piano, a safe, a large aquarium, an appliance needing disconnection, or anything they consider a liability risk.

Ask specifically and in writing rather than assuming, because discovering it on the morning stops the job.

Where the furniture actually goes

The question people have not thought through. Options, roughly in order of cost.

Into other rooms. Cheapest if you have space, and it works well for phased jobs where one room is done at a time.

Into the garage. Common, and a real caution here: a St. George garage in summer is an extreme environment. Leather, electronics, instruments, candles and anything with adhesive should not spend a week in one.

Into a container in the driveway. Sensible for a whole-house floor replacement.

Into storage. For longer projects, and worth pricing against the alternative.

Phase it if you can

Doing a house room by room rather than all at once means furniture only ever moves once, into the adjacent space. It takes longer overall and is usually cheaper and considerably less disruptive.

What we do

Empty a room or a house, put things where you want them, and bring it all back afterwards. Disassemble and reassemble beds and tables. Handle the heavy and awkward items the contractor will not.

We do not disconnect appliances, gas or plumbing, and we do not move an aquarium with water in it.

New flooring needs care on the way back

Worth planning. Ask the installer how long before heavy furniture and rugs can go back on, particularly with site-finished hardwood, which continues curing after it feels dry.

Fit felt pads while pieces are being carried rather than after they are placed, and never drag anything across a new floor.
