How Many Hours Will You Actually Need?
Booking by the hour only works if the estimate is honest, and under-booking costs more than over-booking.
Hiring labour by the hour is the cheapest way to get help, and the thing people get wrong is the number of hours. They book optimistically, run out of time, and end up either rushing the worst part of the job or paying overtime at the end of a long day.
Here is a realistic way to think about it.
Just-In-Time Moving provides labour-only crews across St. George and Washington County.
Rough starting points
For loading or unloading a truck with a two-person crew, on a ground floor with good access: a studio or small one-bedroom is often two to three hours. A two-bedroom, three to five. A three-bedroom house, five to seven. Larger than that, most of a day.
Those are for one end. Loading and unloading both is roughly double, plus the drive.
Treat them as a starting point rather than a quote, because the adjustments below matter more than the bedroom count.
What adds hours
Stairs. The largest single factor. A flight at one end can add substantially, and at both ends more again.
Distance from the door to the truck. Frequently underestimated. A long carry across a car park or a complex adds up over a hundred trips.
Not being finished packing. The commonest cause of overrun by a distance, and the most expensive because you are paying people to wait.
Heavy or specialist items. Appliances, safes, pianos, exercise equipment, sectionals.
Disassembly. Beds, tables and anything that has to come apart on the day.
Summer. Genuinely. Afternoon work in St. George heat is slower than the same work in the morning, and it is not a matter of effort.
What reduces them
Everything packed, sealed and stacked near the door before the crew arrives. Furniture emptied. Routes clear and doors propped. Parking sorted, close. Boxes of a consistent size, which stack and carry far faster than mixed ones. Somebody available to answer questions rather than everybody carrying.
An organised house can cut hours off the same job, and that is entirely within your control.

Book slightly long
If a job looks like four hours, book with the expectation it might be five. Finishing early costs you nothing on an hourly booking; running out of time costs you the worst hour of the day.
Ask about minimums and how time is counted before you book.
