Everything, or just the difficult parts

You do not have to choose between packing all of it yourself and handing over the entire house. Most people land somewhere in between, and that is usually the right answer.

The parts worth handing over are the ones where technique actually matters. Glassware and dishes, which need to be packed on edge rather than stacked flat. Artwork and mirrors. Televisions and monitors. Anything ceramic. Lampshades, which are almost impossible to pack well and very easy to crush. If you do nothing else, let someone else do the kitchen.

The parts worth keeping are the ones where knowing what the item is matters more than knowing how to wrap it. Paperwork, personal effects, jewelry, medication, the contents of a home office. Those should travel with you, not in a truck, and no reputable mover will argue with you about it.

How packing gets quoted

Packing is quoted after we have seen what there is, because the honest answer depends entirely on volume and on what kind of things you own. Two houses of the same square footage can be a day apart in packing time depending on how much glass and how many books are in them.

The estimate comes in writing before anything starts, and it is free. If you want to reduce it, the most effective thing you can do is get rid of things before we arrive rather than after. Packing, moving and unpacking something you did not want is three separate costs for one unwanted object.

The crew arrives with materials and uses proper technique: boxes filled to the top so they do not crush when stacked, weight kept sensible so a box of books does not become a two-person lift, and every box labeled with the room it is going to. That last one costs nothing on the way out and saves a great deal of time on the way in.
