Why an Early Start Saves Money in Summer

Moving is charged by the hour, and in a St. George summer the temperature has a direct effect on how many hours a job takes. A crew working in the afternoon heat is slower than the same crew working at seven in the morning, and no amount of willingness changes that.

Start at first light

Summer highs here regularly sit above a hundred degrees, and the difference between a six o'clock start and a ten o'clock start is substantial.

An early crew gets the heavy work, the loading, done in the cool part of the day. A crew starting mid morning is doing the hardest carrying at the hottest hour, which is slower and genuinely unsafe.

Ask for the earliest slot available. It costs no more per hour and there are usually fewer of them.

Move in the shoulder season if you can choose

Spring and autumn are more comfortable, and in a town with as much seasonal movement as this one they are also often easier to book.

Midsummer is the hardest and slowest time to move here. If your dates are flexible at all, that flexibility is worth real money.

Prepare so nobody is waiting

Paid time spent standing about is expensive in any month and worse in July.

Be completely packed before the crew arrives. Boxes sealed, labelled and stacked near the door. Furniture cleared of contents. Nothing still being decided.

Have the route clear at both ends and the parking sorted, so the truck is not circling.

Have the power on at the new house

Specific to a hot climate and frequently overlooked. If the air conditioning at the destination is not running before the truck arrives, the house will be well over a hundred inside and unloading into it is punishing.

Get the utilities transferred a day early and have the cooling on. This genuinely affects how long the unload takes.

Provide water

Not a courtesy so much as a practicality. A crew that stays hydrated works at a steady pace; a crew that does not slows down. Cold water available at both ends is the cheapest efficiency available.

Move less

The largest saving in any climate. Clearing the garage weeks ahead removes weight, volume and hours, and anything unwanted costs three times over.
