Why yard waste is priced the way it is

Two different problems, often in the same job.

Green waste is bulky and light. Branches, palm fronds and cleared shrubs fill a truck quickly without weighing much. Here the cost is space, and cutting material down before collection genuinely reduces it.

Soil, sod, gravel and rock are the opposite. Extremely dense, and a pile that looks modest can exceed a vehicle's legal load. Removed sod is particularly deceptive because it holds water and soil together.

So the useful thing to tell us is what the material is, not how big the heap looks.

Landscape conversions

The common job here. Turf comes out, irrigation is reworked, gravel goes in, and the resulting material is a mixture: sod, soil, old irrigation line, edging, sometimes concrete or pavers.

Separate it if you can, because it genuinely affects disposal. Clean soil and green waste have better options than a mixed load. Concrete and masonry sometimes have their own route. Metal always has value and should be its own pile.

Mixed everything goes to the most expensive destination by default.

Palms and large trimmings

Palm fronds are awkward, sharp and bulkier than they look, and a mature trim produces a surprising volume. Trunk sections are extremely heavy and should be cut to a length two people can handle.

Say if there are stumps. Stump removal is a different trade and not something a hauling crew handles.

What we cannot take

Treated timber in some cases, and always tell us if it is. Chemicals, fertiliser, weedkiller and pool chemicals go to county household hazardous waste rather than on a truck. Anything pressurised.

And if there is any chance of buried irrigation or utilities where material is being dug, that is worth resolving before rather than during.

Practical points

Have it in one accessible pile near where a vehicle can reach if you can, since a long carry across a garden is most of the labour.

Do the work in cooler months where you have the choice. Yard clearance in a St. George July is genuinely hard going and takes longer for it.
