Why it is priced on weight, not volume

Household junk is bulky and light, so a truckload is limited by space. Construction debris is the opposite.

Concrete, tile, plaster, roofing, brick and soil are extremely dense. A small pile can exceed a vehicle's legal load before it looks like much at all, and disposal facilities charge by weight.

So a quote for building waste depends on what the material actually is, far more than how big the heap looks. Tell us what it is rather than only how much.

Separate it if you can

This genuinely reduces cost. Clean, separated material has better disposal options than a mixed load.

Metal has real scrap value and should always be its own pile. Clean wood and cardboard are usually straightforward. Concrete and masonry sometimes have their own route.

Mixed rubble containing everything goes to the most expensive destination by default, because sorting it afterwards costs more than it recovers.

What a hauling crew cannot take

Worth settling before the day.

Asbestos, or anything suspected. In older properties this includes some floor tiles, pipe lagging, certain textured ceiling coatings and some siding. It requires testing and licensed abatement, and no general crew should disturb it. If you are unsure, stop and have it tested.

Paint, solvents and treatment chemicals. County household hazardous waste collection handles these. Fully dried latex paint is often acceptable as ordinary waste once solid.

Anything pressurised, including propane and fire extinguishers.

Dumpster or crew?

For a long renovation generating waste over weeks, a container is usually cheaper, and you are on site doing the loading anyway.

A crew wins when the job is done, the volume is moderate, you need it gone quickly, access is difficult, or nobody on site can lift it. For a finished remodel, that is frequently the case.

Practical points

Have it in one accessible place if possible. Nails and screws are the main hazard; a crew will handle it, and a swept site is faster and cheaper.
