Filling and Starting Up a Spa After the Move

The tub is in place. Getting it running properly again is the part that goes wrong, and hard water here does not help.

A spa that has been drained, moved, sat empty for a while and refilled is not simply switched back on. A few steps in the wrong order can damage a pump within seconds, and the water chemistry in southern Utah has its own particularities.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout St. George and Washington County. We move spas; the commissioning below is the owner's or a spa technician's part, and it is worth understanding.

Do not power it up dry

The single most important point. Running a pump without water destroys the seal, and it happens in seconds rather than minutes.

The breaker stays off until the spa is filled. Every time, without exception.

Fill through the filter housing

The standard method, and it matters after a move. Filling through the filter compartment rather than over the top pushes water into the plumbing from the correct direction and greatly reduces the chance of an air lock.

Air locks are the commonest post-move complaint: the heater runs but nothing circulates, or a pump makes noise and moves no water. After a spa has been drained, blown out and tilted, there is a great deal of air in the system.

If you get one, most spas are cleared by loosening a pump union slightly to let the air out, or through the manufacturer's stated procedure. Do not simply keep running it.

Check before you fill

While it is empty and accessible, look over the plumbing and unions for anything loosened in transit, and make sure any union opened for draining has been closed.

Refit the filter, which is frequently left out and forgotten.

Confirm the spa is level. Water shows an out-of-level tub immediately, and correcting it after filling means draining again.

Water here is hard

Worth planning for. Southern Utah water is generally hard and mineral-rich, which affects a spa in two ways: scale on the heater element and in the plumbing, and chemistry that is more difficult to hold steady.

Test the fill water rather than assuming, and expect to manage calcium hardness and alkalinity deliberately. Many owners here use a pre-filter on the hose when filling, which is inexpensive and reduces the problem at the source.

Balance in the order your chemistry guide specifies, and give the water time to circulate between adjustments rather than adding everything at once.

Give it a day

Let it heat, circulate and stabilise before using it, and check underneath for leaks once it is up to temperature. A slow leak from a joint disturbed in transit shows itself in the first day rather than the first hour.
