Clearly worth bringing

Anything with meaning. This is not an economic question and should not be treated as one.

Beds and mattresses in good condition. Expensive, and you need one immediately.

Clothing, books you actually read, kitchen equipment you actually use. Light, or high value for the space.

Tools. Heavy, but replacing a tool collection is genuinely expensive.

Worth reconsidering

Flat-pack furniture. Frequently the clearest case. It does not travel well, it often cannot be dismantled and rebuilt reliably, and the freight can exceed what a replacement costs.

Bulk consumables. Cleaning products, paper goods, pantry stock. Heavy, cheap, and some of it cannot travel at all.

Old appliances, especially where the apartment provides them. Check what is included before shipping a refrigerator to a unit that has one.

Cold-climate equipment. Snow gear and heavy winter furnishings frequently arrive here and are never used again.

Anything already failing. A move does not improve a sofa with a broken frame.

Do not overcorrect

The opposite error is real and more expensive. People sell everything expecting to replace it cheaply, then furnish a whole apartment at once, at full price, under time pressure, while sleeping on the floor.

Replacing a household costs considerably more than moving one. Keep the core.

The apartment particulars

Find out what is provided before deciding anything: refrigerator, cooker, microwave, washer and dryer or a hookup with nothing in it, and window coverings.

Then measure. Apartment rooms are smaller than house rooms, and furniture that will not fit is the worst possible thing to have paid freight on.

One thing specific to arriving here: hold off on buying for the climate until you have lived through a little of it. People ship or buy heavy curtains, rugs and furnishings chosen for somewhere colder, then find that what a St. George apartment actually needs is shade on the west-facing windows and rather less of everything else.
