Get an overlap if you can

The foundation of every move that does not involve closing. Even a week of holding both premises transforms the job from an event into a process.

Negotiate it into the lease if you are signing one; landlords are frequently accommodating about a short overlap, and the rent is usually less than the trading you would lose.

Move in the right order

With an overlap, you move by category rather than all at once:

First, everything not needed to operate. Storage, archives, spare furniture, stock you are not selling this week. This is often half the volume and none of it affects trading.

Then set up the new premises properly while still working from the old one. Connectivity in, network tested, furniture placed, everything commissioned and checked.

Then move the working core in one short, planned session, typically overnight or across a weekend.

Then clear the old premises at your own pace once you are trading again.

The critical part, the bit that could stop you working, is reduced to a few hours instead of days.

Move people in waves

Where you have staff, split them. Half work from the new address while half keep the old one running, then swap. Nobody is idle, and there is always somebody answering the phone.

If some roles can work remotely for a few days, use that for the transition rather than for the whole move.

After hours

We work evenings and weekends, which is often the whole answer for a customer-facing business. You close at the normal time and open at the normal time somewhere else.

Check both buildings permit it. Access hours and lift bookings are frequently the limiting factor rather than the crew.

Protect continuity, not just furniture

The phone number and the internet are what actually determine whether you are trading. Order the circuit as soon as the lease is signed and arrange number handling well ahead.

Tell customers before, during and after, and put signage at the old address.
