Move in your quiet season

This sounds obvious and businesses routinely fail to act on it, usually because a lease date drove the decision and nobody asked whether it could be negotiated.

It is worth asking. A few weeks either way on a handover can be the difference between moving in your quietest period and moving in your busiest, and that difference is far larger than anything you will save by choosing one mover over another.

If the date genuinely cannot move, then the sequencing matters more. Get the customer-facing part of the operation working first and finish the back of house afterwards. A stockroom in boxes is survivable. A closed front door is not.

Hospitality and food service

These bring specifics worth flagging early.

Commercial kitchen equipment that is plumbed, gassed or hard-wired needs specialist disconnection and reconnection at both ends, booked separately and in advance. That is not moving work and it should not be discovered on move day.

Anything refrigerated needs a plan for its contents before the equipment moves, and that plan needs deciding days ahead rather than on the morning.

Fixtures, seating and counters usually come apart, and how they come apart decides how quickly the new space can open. Photograph the current arrangement before anything is dismantled and label components by where they are going, not where they came from.

The practical layer

Tell us what the loading situation is at both addresses: a dock, a ground-level door, or street access only. That changes the equipment and crew more than the volume does.

Check whether either landlord or property manager wants a certificate of insurance. We are licensed in Utah, carry general liability insurance and can provide one, and their processing is routinely slower than anyone plans for.

Nominate one person present who can answer questions without phoning anybody. Every commercial move produces a trickle of small unanticipated decisions and somebody has to be there to make them.

Plan the signage early. New signage often has a lead time measured in weeks and it is routinely ordered late, after the lease is signed and before anybody has thought about the move itself. The same goes for anything else carrying your address, which is worth listing in one place ahead of time rather than discovering item by item in the fortnight after you reopen.
