A downsizing move is rarely difficult because of the volume. It is difficult because of what it represents, and because deciding what goes is genuinely hard work that cannot be rushed by a crew standing in the hallway waiting for an answer.

Just-In-Time Moving is locally owned and works with older clients and their families throughout St. George and Washington County. St. George draws a lot of people in retirement, and a good share of what we do is either someone arriving here for that reason or someone moving from a house into somewhere smaller within it.

Downsizing at your own pace

The practical shape of these moves is usually the same. There is more furniture than the new place will hold, there are decades of belongings, and there are perhaps three or four items that genuinely matter more than everything else combined. Our job is to make sure those items are handled properly and that the rest of it does not become overwhelming.

What that means in practice is turning up prepared to work at the pace of the household rather than at the pace of the truck. If a decision is not made yet, it is not made yet. It is far better for us to make a second trip than for someone to throw out something they wanted because a crew was waiting.

It also means being clear about what is going where. A downsizing move often splits three ways: what goes to the new home, what goes to family, and what is being cleared. Sorting that out on paper before the day, even roughly, takes an enormous amount of pressure off the morning itself. Labels help. Colored stickers help more.

Working with family and with facilities

Often the person organizing the move is not the person moving. Adult children coordinating from out of state is one of the more common situations, and it works fine as long as it is clear from the start who is making decisions on the day and who we should be calling if something needs an answer.

If the move is into a senior living community or a care facility, they will usually have their own rules: which entrance to use, which elevator, what times moves can happen, whether furniture needs to meet particular requirements. Get those in writing from the facility early and pass them on. Facilities are used to this and are generally helpful, but their move-in windows can be narrower than people expect.

Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included, and the bed being back together and made up on the first night matters more in this kind of move than in any other. Say so and it will be the first thing done rather than the last.
