Deciding not to move a sofa is easy. Actually making the sofa leave the house is the part that stalls, and furniture is the category where people give up and move it anyway.

Here is a realistic account of each route, including how long it takes.

Selling: only for some things

Realistic for solid wood, recognisable quality brands, mid-century pieces, decent patio sets, and anything genuinely good in good condition.

Not realistic for flat-pack furniture, worn upholstery, mattresses, entertainment centres, or anything with damage. These are listed constantly and rarely move.

If you sell, start six weeks out rather than two. Price to sell rather than to what it was worth. Insist buyers arrange collection, and be very clear about which floor it is on and whether there are stairs, because the commonest failure is a buyer who arrives and cannot get it out.

Donating: better than people expect, with conditions

Charities will take serviceable furniture and it is a considerably better outcome than a landfill.

Two realities to plan around. They are selective, and rightly so: stained, damaged, heavily worn or non-working items get refused, as do most mattresses. And collection needs booking well ahead, particularly for larger items.

Call and describe honestly what you have rather than hoping. A wasted collection slot helps nobody.

Ask about a receipt if a deduction matters to you.

Giving it away

Often the fastest route for something serviceable but not worth selling. Free listings move quickly, and a curb-side item in a residential neighbourhood frequently disappears within hours.

Two cautions: check whether your HOA permits it, since many here do not, and never leave upholstery out overnight where it may be rained on, because then it becomes a disposal problem rather than a gift.

Disposal: the honest remainder

Some furniture has no taker, and that is normal rather than a failure of effort. Broken pieces, old mattresses, worn recliners and anything that has been outdoors too long in this sun.

Handle it in one hauling visit before the move rather than moving it and dealing with it at the new house, which is what most people do and what costs the most.
