Most household items are individually replaceable. A piano frequently is not, either because of its value or because of what it is to the family. That makes the cover questions worth asking properly rather than assuming.

Three separate exposures

Your property. The most likely thing to be damaged, honestly. Doorframes, walls at carrying height on a staircase, stair nosings, and floors under a concentrated load. General liability covers damage caused in the course of the work.

The instrument. Cover for goods being moved is a separate question with its own limits, and for an instrument of real value it is worth asking specifically what applies, what the limit is, and whether declaring a value changes anything.

Injury. Several hundred pounds on a staircase is where this matters, and it is a genuine reason to verify insurance rather than a formality.

What is not covered anywhere

Tuning. Moving a piano affects its tuning, and so does the change of room, temperature and humidity. That is expected rather than damage, on every piano moved by anybody, and it is not a claim.

Pre-existing condition. Which is why photographs before the move matter more on an instrument than on most furniture. Photograph the case from several angles, the legs and pedal lyre, and anything already chipped or loose.

Inherent fragility on an old instrument. A piano with structural problems already present can suffer from a move that a sound one would tolerate. If it is old and you do not know its condition, having a technician look before moving is worth more than any conversation with a mover.

Practical steps

Tell us the value if it is significant, so it is handled accordingly rather than as ordinary furniture.

Photograph it before we arrive.

Check your own homeowner or renter policy, which sometimes covers a scheduled item like an instrument specifically, and which may require a valuation for anything above a threshold.

Raise anything on the day while the crew is present.

One point that catches people out on an instrument in particular: if the piano is going into storage at any stage, the environment matters as much as the handling. A unit swings through real temperature and humidity ranges across a Utah year, and that is harder on a wooden instrument under string tension than the journey is. If storage is part of your plan, say so at booking, because it changes what we would advise and it is worth discussing with a technician rather than assuming a piano simply keeps.
