Almost every piano can be moved. Not every piano can be moved along the route somebody has in mind, and the difference matters because attempting it anyway is how instruments and staircases get destroyed.

The situations where we say so

A turn that will not take it. Not the stairs, the corner. A ninety degree turn into a narrow hallway with a low ceiling above it has a fixed geometry, and if the instrument does not fit through it, no amount of crew changes that.

A staircase we are not confident in. In older housing here, basement stairs in particular were built as service stairs. Several hundred pounds passing over treads of unknown condition is a question for somebody qualified, and where we think it needs asking we say so rather than proceeding.

Conditions on the day. Ice on outside steps with a piano is not a manageable risk. If the approach cannot be made safe, rescheduling is the right answer and we would rather lose the day than the instrument.

An instrument that should not travel. Occasionally a piano is in poor enough structural condition that moving it is likely to finish it. We will say if we think that, and recommend a technician looks first.

What that is worth to you

Finding out beforehand is the whole point. A company that discovers a problem in your hallway has already partly created it, because a piano halfway up a flight is a worse situation than one that never left the room.

It is also the reason to send photographs before booking rather than after. The staircase, the turn, the landing, the approach outside. Five minutes on your phone gets you a real answer.

What we can usually offer instead

A different route, sometimes. A different destination room, often. Dismantling further where the instrument allows it.

Occasionally the honest answer is that this piano and this room do not go together, and knowing that before you buy a house or a piano is genuinely useful.

The same applies in reverse when somebody is being given an instrument. People are offered free pianos regularly, usually by a household that needs one gone, and the move costs what it costs whether the piano is valuable or worthless. Get the route assessed before you agree to take it rather than after, because the awkward version of this is a piano you did not really want, in a house it will not fit, that somebody now expects you to collect by Saturday.
